Longwell Green Sports Juniors tournament is a big hit

Thursday, June 18, 2009, 07:00

Longwell Green Sports Juniors say the success of their third annual tournament is evidence the club is gaining rapid momentum.

Some 189 teams from across the Bristol, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Somerset, Wales and Wiltshire areas descended on the club for an event that brought boys and girls from Under-sevens to Under-14s together.

Tournament committee chair Mike Vernon said the matches had all been played in "fine spirit", enthusing: "It was great to see so many kids, some from way out of our area, having such a great time."

Club chair Jo Jones added: "This was our largest event so far and all profits are to be ploughed back into local grassroots football."

Longwell Green has grown dramatically over recent years to become one of the largest clubs in Bristol, running 16 boys' and six girls' teams.

Longwell Green Girls are holding an Under-13 11-a-side tournament at Southey Playing Fields on July 25. Contact Jo Jones on 01179 870326 or 07787 853885 for details.

AEK Boco Girls B Under-13s need players for their Under-14 squad. Contact manager Andy Dring on 07950 807197.
