Wednesday, August 05, 2009, 07:00

Charlie Walker starred with the bat as Bristol beat Gloucester City Winget by eight wickets to win the Southwest Glass Under-17 Knockout Cup final.

Walker's unbeaten 79 earned him the man-of-the-match award as Bristol reached 146-2 in reply to Gloucester's 142-2.

There was one run-out in the Gloucester innings, with Ollie Folland taking Bristol's other wicket.

In reply, Walker led the way for a patched-up Bristol side, who, among others, were without regular skipper Sheridan Leech and usual opening bowler Mike Wilmott.

Lisle Durrans also contributed 42 as Bristol, with 12-year-old Jack Ellison among three under-15s in the side, claimed a convincing victory.

Gloucester City Winget had reached the final after Tom Morris took 4-9 – including a hat-trick – against Chipping Sodbury in the last four.

Almondsbury won the Don Brooks Under-17 Knockout Plate – their first ever trophy – with a 74-run victory over Shirehampton.

Billy Cook scored 20 of Shirehampton's 56 runs, while Almondsbury's Aaron Jones claimed the man-of-the-match award for his 49 runs in his side's reply.

He was run out one short of his half-century and also took 1-7 with the ball.

All-rounder Lewis Coombes guided Knowle to victory over Winterbourne A in the Urban Windows Under-15 Knockout Cup final.

Coombes took 4-18 with the ball before scoring 42 not out with the bat as his side beat Winterbourne by eight wickets.

Put in to bat by Knowle, Winterbourne reached 131-9 after recovering from 30-3, with James Taverner's 61 steadying the ship after a shaky start.

Makeshift opener Coombes and Sam Hanks set the tone for Knowle in their response, compiling a 66-run opening partnership.

Hanks departed for 42 but man-of-the-match Coombes and skipper Jake Edmonds (25no) saw Knowle comfortably reach their victory target.

Liam Lester's 73 not out was key to Nailsea A's nine-wicket victory over Pucklechurch in the final of the Frank Benner Under-13 Knockout Cup.

Ryan Watts scored 62 not out as Pucklechurch reached 120-8, with Lester returning bowling figures of 2-7 from his four overs. He then went on to star with the bat as his side reached 122-1.

Callum Murphy's 41 helped Bristol YMCA B to an eight-wicket victory over Thornbury in the quarter-finals of the Joe Roden League Under-15 Championship.

Jack Summerfield scored 41 in Thornbury's 108-8 before Murphy matched his total in YMCA's victorious 109-2

Freddie Oldfield blasted 80 as Old Bristolians/Westbury beat Frenchay Blue by 67 runs in the quarter-finals of the Les Hodge League Under-13 Championship.
