ROOFER Lee Matthews and budding actress Alex Dane have been put in the spotlight after being named Bristol's next top models.

After a four-month campaign they were chosen at a glittering event in the city to win a modelling contract that could change their lives.

Both were stunned at their success on the catwalk, which came after the original 100 entries were whittled down to 16 finalists.

Lee, 21, of Bradley Stoke, was speechless as his name was called out and his mum Nikki ran onto stage to hug him.

Also in the audience was his girlfriend Susannah as well as other friends and family.

Lee, who also plays semi-professional football for Almondsbury, said: "I have enjoyed it very much, meeting the team and stylists, and feel I have gained confidence in myself.

"I entered because my mum told me to give it a go and I'm glad I did. It's amazing to have won, I've never had this much attention in my life!

"Now I can't wait to take part in Bristol Fashion Week and to making a go of a modelling career. I'm going to put as much hard work in as I can and see where it gets me."

Alex, 19, of Portishead, is currently working at Waitrose after taking a year out when she left Gordano School last year, but her dream is to become an actress.

She said: "I was gobsmacked to even get into the final so to win is incredible. I have absolutely loved every aspect of this competition, from the catwalk in the semi-final to the photoshoot wearing the clothes from John Lewis.

"I have been so nervous about the final, I even dreamt about tripping on the catwalk, but it has been brilliant. I loved the clothes, and I can't believe I've been wearing a pair of £170 shoes!"

The runners up were Paul Selway and Kerry-Ann Waison, who came third, and Ashley Le-House Reuben and Verity Everett, who came second.

The search for potential models was launched in May when modelling hopefuls took part in photoshoots at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway, Oceana nightclub on the waterfront and the Evening Post offices.

We were looking for the girl and guy who had what it takes to make it in the modelling world, impressing both Evening Post readers as well as a panel of judges.

Alex and Lee now win a year's contract with Bristol's Mustard Model Agency and their first job will see them take to the catwalk as part of Bristol Fashion Week. They will also win a £50 gift card for The Mall, Cribbs Causeway.

But choosing the winners was a difficult task for the four judges – Evening Post editor Mike Norton, Jenny Clark of Mustard Models, The Mall's marketing manager Maria Crayton and Steve Durrant of SAKS hairdressers.

Mr Norton said: "What I would say to all the finalists is that if you aren't the winner tonight, it does not mean to say that you don't have a future in modelling.

"If modelling is your dream then don't give up."
