Gloucestershire have signed 18-year-old left-arm seamer David Payne on a two year development contract.

The Dorset-born player has been part of Gloucestershire's Academy Programme for two years.

With an excellent track record for the second XI in 2008, David was rewarded for his continued improvements when he was given England recognition last year.

In 2008, he played alongside fellow academy player Jack Taylor as part of an England Development side against South Africa and MCC Universities.

He recently went to South Africa on tour with England U19s.

Payne said: "I am very excited about this opportunity, it has been something I have been working towards for a long time. I am looking forward to working with the professional players this summer and can now focus on working even harder to reach my goal and make my debut first class appearance."

Academy director Owen Dawkins said: "I am really pleased David has signed a development contract with the club, it is well deserved after his outstanding performances last season in the second eleven and his England call ups in the winter.

"It is a fantastic message to all the aspiring young cricketers about the opportunities being presented to talented, hardworking youngsters."

Payne will link up with the pro squad during his summer holidays and will continue with the academy throughout the rest of the year.
