Goalkeeper Matthews in inspired form as Yate Town earn FA Trophy replay

Yate Town 1 Hungerford Town 1: Yate Town had goalkeeper Lee Matthews to thank for a series of late saves as they earned a replay from this FA Trophy second qualifying round clash.

Hungerford took the lead in the sixth minute, when the Yate defence failed to deal with a free-kick on the left from Toby Clark and Bradley Clark crashed home a well-struck volley from the edge of the penalty area.

Yate's only first-half chance came midway through the period when Jacob Cox broke down the right and cut inside, but his shot was well-saved by goalkeeper James Foster.

The home side took the game to their opponents in the opening minutes of the second half and got back on terms after two minutes, when a Callum Stewart cross was headed back across goal by Joe White for Cox to score from close range.

Hungerford defender Kevin Halliday was then just off target with a shot before Yate had appeals for a penalty turned down when Mark Reynolds appeared to be brought down by Foster.

At the other end, Hungerford also had appeals for a spot-kick rejected when Steve Cook went down.

Matthews went full-length to turn a Clark shot behind for a corner in the 72nd minute before Yate went close with a header from Reynolds and then Cox twice could have given Yate the lead.

But then the visitors took control of the game in the closing stages and it needed two fine saves from Matthews to deny Clark and, in the final minute, the goalkeeper did well to block a close-range shot from Mark McMeeking to ensure a replay tomorrow night.
