Paulton Rovers manager Andrew Jones delivers timely warning

Friday, October 30, 2009, 07:00

Paulton Rovers manager Andrew Jones will give a timely warning to his players ahead of tomorrow's South & West Division home fixture against Taunton Town.

Normally, the prospect of a Somerset derby would be incentive enough to ensure a committed performance. Jones is well aware, though, that most of his players' minds – and that of the whole club – are firmly fixed on the following weekend's historic FA Cup first-round tie against Norwich City.

Jones won't trot out the normal cliché to his players of 'playing for your place'. He doesn't have the resources to be that cavalier or ruthless. Instead, he will call on the pride and self-espect of those selected to ensure a good performance.

"There are still places available in the squad for next weekend so that is important," said Jones. "I want people keen to be in the squad for the Taunton match and then Norwich for the following week. But before Norwich come here there is a game to be won and it would be nice to get a few more points on the board."

Jones admits that since last weekend's draw pitted Paulton against the League One side his life has been turned upside down.

"It has been absolutely crazy," he said . "I haven't been in my day job since the draw (Jones owns Bristol wholesale flower business company Flowervision) and don't expect to be back there until after the match is played.

"You just can't imagine how much work there is to be done to put on a game like this, but it is history in the making and we are living the dream. It is a brilliant time for all of us at the club."

As for tomorrow's game, assistant manager Paul Milsom is suspended and skipper Ben Cleverley is still recovering from his broken metatarsal, although Jones gives him an outside chance of making the Canaries clash.

"Ben is making a rapid recovery," said Jones. "That's the magic of the cup for you."

Not too many pundits talk about the magic of the FA Trophy but Yate Town boss Dave Mogg will remind his squad of the £3,000 prize-money on offer for beating Hungerford Town in tomorrow's second-qualifying round match at Lodge Road.

"It is a match worth winning and the money would come in useful," said Mogg who, like all the area's other Southern League managers, can only look on with wonder at Paulton's success.

"I think we are all envious at what Paulton have achieved but fair play to them, they have deserved it," added Mogg.

Sam Duggan is still out injured so Adie Adams is back in the squad as he looks to play his way back to fitness.

Mangotsfield United will give fitness tests to Jason Wood (knee) and goalkeeper Tony Court (groin) ahead of the league match at home to Windsor & Eton.

"The pair both missed Tuesday's Southern League Cup win over Merthyr Tydfil but reserve-team keeper Sam Alexander came in and did really well," said manager Phil Bater.

Defender Scott Hendy, whose wrist plaster cast is covered in bubble wrap to allow him to play, will be on the bench and Bater is also hoping Ryan Bennett will return. Both Lee Collier and Martin Paul are still out, however.

Clevedon Town have no game following their early Trophy exit.
