The Proclaimers support Bristol's 2018 World Cup bid

Friday, October 23, 2009, 07:00

In their best-known hit they promise to walk 500 miles – but luckily for The Proclaimers the journey would be 120 miles shorter were they to take in a World Cup match in Bristol.

The twin musicians, pictured, have backed the city's bid to become a host venue in England's bid for the 2018 World Cup.

Despite being well-known supporters of Scottish independence, Charlie and Craig Reid, 47, were happy to sing the praises of Bristol – a mere 380 miles from their birthplace of Leith – during a recent gig at Colston Hall.

"It would be fantastic if Bristol was to be a part of the World Cup in 2018," said Craig Reid. "Bristol has every chance – people enjoy coming here and there has been noticeable investment, like the refurbished Colston Hall."

His brother Charlie added: "It is a beautiful city and the surrounding areas offer a great place to visit.

"For Bristol to be selected would be a boost for the whole of the South West."
