Green's back Bristol's World Cup bid but with an eco-friendly goal

The Green Party in Bristol have given its support to Bristol's World Cup bid, but says any new stadium in Ashton Vale should comply with Fifa's 'Green Goal' programme and be built as eco-friendly as possible.

Greens' Tony Dyer told Bristol's cabinet members, this could make all the difference in bringing the World Cup to Bristol, should England's bid be successful.

He explained how successful bidders in Germany, South Africa and Brazil have all taken innovative steps to create more efficient energy systems, to reduce the consumption of potable water, to avoid and reduce waste, and to increase the use of public transport to Fifa events.

Bristol South Green Party spokesman Glenn Vowles said: "For many of the 'Green Goal' objectives, the stadium design is crucial, and what's proposed at Ashton Vale doesn't come near it.
