Starting in the main foyer of the Showcase Cinema de Lux it is clear that its owners, National Amusements, want the cinema experience to be more than about simply watching a movie.

Each room features wall-to-wall screens and custom-designed, deep-cushioned, rocking recliner seats arranged in a stadium style to ensure cinema-goers an unobstructed view of the screen. At almost 6ft tall, I also appreciated the extra leg room between each row of seats.

In pitch black, apart from hand rails, the film experience is also designed to be the best on offer. All screens feature Dolby Digital Sound and fully digital, 3D projection.

For the ultimate in luxury, guests can enjoy the Directors' Hall, a premium auditorium featuring extra-wide Ultra Leather loveseats with adjustable tables, reserved seating, and exclusive access to the Directors' Lounge, where guests can indulge in dinner and drinks before or after the movie. With entrees, appetisers and cocktails on the menu, the lounge is a far cry from pick'n'mix and adds a touch of class to the evening.

Even with floors being laid, fire alarms tested and lampshades fitted, the cinema has the wow factor that can only increase once the finishing touches are complete.

General manager Dan Barrett began working for Showcase Cinemas as an usher 13 years ago at the age of 16.

He said: "I'm really excited about opening in my home town. This is only the third cinema of its kind in the country and it's going to be fantastic. Bristol cinema-goers are in for a decadent experience."

If cinefiles would rather bypass the box office, they have the option to book online and print off tickets themselves. There is also a special desk for the Directors' Lounge which, according to UK theatre manager Karen Fox, is the cinema equivalent of a concierge in a hotel.

"From here you can book seats in the Directors' Hall, order a taxi home, anything the guest requires really," she said.

The idea behind Cinema de Lux is to maximise on the leisure experience. Owners hope people will enjoy a visit to the cinema whether it is to watch the latest film through the latest technology or to enjoy drinks or a meal in chic surroundings. Next to the box office and refreshment stands is the Studio One restaurant offering an international menu and bar.

"People can pop in for a coffee whilst shopping or even come for lunch without necessarily going to watch a film. For most people going to the cinema is a treat, but this is pure indulgence."

Around the standard cinemas are plush sofas and waiting areas all designed to add to the feel of luxury.

Ms Fox said: "These 11 auditoria are called standard, but I would call them business class. We liken the Directors' Lounge to first class, but there is no economy here."
