Robins star Low says new men will settle quickly
JOSH LOW believes it won't take long for Cheltenham Town's new signings to gel as a winning outfit.
Low, Lloyd Owusu, Jennison Myrie-Williams and on-loan Barry Hayles are set to play together for the first time against Huddersfield Town at Whaddon Road today.
Town boss Keith Downing will be hoping that the four click very quickly as the bottom two teams in League One meet in a game that almost deserves that over-worked 'must-win' tag even at this early stage of the new campaign.
"In terms of us new lads, we should fit in very quickly because apart from Jennison, who has been here before as well, we are older professionals," said Low.
"We have all been around a bit and know what it is all about and it won't take long to settle down.
"At this stage it may be more a case of match sharpness because I know I haven't played many games this season, although I don't know what the situation with Lloyd and Barry is.
"But I'm sure we should all fit in well."
The good news for Downing is that the trio of Owusu, Hayles and Low are all potential game-beakers, that is to say players who have the ability to turn a match and provide a moment of inspiration on top of the sweat and toil.
And it was noticeable that there was an extra buzz on the training pitch this week with the players determined to improve their performances after suffering three heavy defeats in their opening four league games.
"When new players come in it gives a reaction at any club," added Low.
"You are always pleased to see new lads to freshen things up and we have seen that in training this week.
"We are all looking forward to Huddersfield Town and moving on from the last result.
"We have some very good footballers here but I know myself that in this division you have to earn the right to play football first.
"Against Huddersfield we will have to work hard before we can play our football. But a win would be great and at this stage three points can make a big difference in our league position and we will want a reaction after last week."
Cheltenham may look more dangerous going forward but that will count for nothing if they keep leaking goals at the rate of four a game, so that is where Downing's most important decisions are to be made.
He would love to have Shane Duff back but the central defender is still rated doubtful with an Achilles tendon injury, so Downing will choose from Michael Townsend, Gavin Caines, Andy Gallinagh or Craig Armstrong for his central pairing.
"We have Gavin Caines back but he has had just one reserve-team game against Team Bath and a sprinkling of action in the Carling Cup, so I must make a judgement on him if he is ready for first-team action," said Downing.
"And Andy Gallinagh is also pushing for a place, so it depends on what I opt to do with my back four and whether I stick with the tried and trusted. But they have got to be better."
Otherwise, it won't matter what Low and his new pals do at the other end of the pitch.
Cheltenham (probable): Higgs; J Gill, Caines, Townsend, Wright; Sinclair, Russell, Bird, Low; Hayles, Owusu. Subs from: Armstrong, Gallinagh, Brown, Lindegaard, Vincent, B Gill, Myrie-Williams.
