Bristol woman rescued from fire

Monday, October 26, 2009, 07:00

A Bristol woman with a broken ankle was carried to safety by fire fighters after food left under a grill started a small fire in her Withywood kitchen.

The 71-year-old woman was woken by the smell of smoke just after midnight on Saturday.

Her daughter, thought to be in her 30s, was believed to have fallen asleep while waiting for the food to cook in the first floor flat in Elmtree Drive.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said there were no working smoke detectors in the flat but the smoke alerted the mother, who was unable to get out without help due to her injury. She was taken to hospital for a check-up.
