Oldland stay in top spot

Wednesday, September 30, 2009, 07:00

Oldland Abbotonians retained top spot in the Gloucestershire County Youth League with a 2-1 victory in an exciting clash with Forest Green Rovers.

Oldland scored first through Sam Lee's sixth goal in four matches, only for Josh Wilson to net Forest Green's equaliser. Mitchell Moreton settled the outcome with Oldland's winner.

Almondsbury maintained the pressure on Oldland at the top of the table with a 3-2 win at neighbours Thornbury Town. Matt Weeks and Will Howard were on target for Thornbury, while Alex Tanner, Ashley Knight and Matt Knight hit Almonds' goals.

Alex Tanner's late equaliser had earned Almondsbury a 2-2 draw in their midweek match with Cheltenham Saracens. Shaun Coles gave Almonds the lead in first-half injury-time before Saracens hit back with two Gary Robinson goals.

Winterbourne United cruised to their second win of the season, a Jack Denning double and a Tristan Day strike clinching a 3-0 victory over Cadbury Heath.

Longwell Green Sports won 7-3 at Wotton Rovers – their first victory of the season.

The visitors were always in command and were 5-1 up a half-time. Charlie Horwood and Jamie Wright both netted twice for Longwell Green and they were joined on the scoresheet by Marcus Werrett, Sam Gerrish and Dan Stockford. Tom Freeman, Kieran Frost and Joel Blackie replied for Wotton.
