North Somerset singers' holy hits out on CD

Wednesday, October 07, 2009, 07:00

Church singers from across North Somerset have proved they have the X-Factor after recording their own CD.

The group of 50 singers, led by Yatton Moor Team Rector Rev Ian Hubbard, have put together a CD featuring both sacred and secular music.

The singers are all members of choirs associated with the five team churches including St Mary's, Yatton Church choir, children of the Church and the Yatton and Winscombe Chorale.

The 22 tracks include music ranging from the 16th century to the present day with four pieces written by Rev Hubbard himself.

Other composers include Stanford, Wesley and Handel.

The recording of the CD in St Mary's Church was masterminded by Jonathan Lane, a one-time recording engineer for BBC Radio 3.

Rev Hubbard, 66, said: "It was a dream come true as plans had been afoot for years to undertake such a venture.

"It will make many listeners wonder how on earth our villagers have reached a standard comparable to that attained in large town and city choirs.

"Music often touches those parts which the spoken word cannot reach.

The CD costs £6 (two for £10 and five for £20) and is available from Yatton Moor Team Office in St Mary's Church, Yatton, or from Yatton News in High Street, Clevedon Music Shop, Alexander Road, Clevedon, or Providence Music Shop in St George's Road, College Green, Bristol.
