We must win every game, says Bristol Rovers defender Jones

On-loan Wolves defender Daniel Jones insists that every game between now and the end of the season is a must-win, regardless of whether Bristol Rovers' bid to make an unlikely late charge for the play-offs is over.

Rovers' bid to replicate the last-ditch heroics that saw them earn promotion from League Two three years ago suffered a major setback with defeat at Exeter City on Wednesday night.

Manager Paul Trollope refused to concede that his side's chances of finishing the season in the top six were at an end when asked about it after the game – but did admit that the defeat at St James' Park had made things 'difficult'.

Eleven points separate the Pirates from the top six with 10 games of the campaign remaining and, with a difficult looking run-in to come, the likelihood is that Rovers will be playing League One football next season.

Jones, however, believes that nobody inside the Rovers camp will be downing tools and thinking about the beach, even if and when a play-off spot becomes mathematically impossible.

Rovers continue their campaign with a trip to West Country rivals Yeovil tomorrow and Jones insisted: "Every game is a must-win game."

"There aren't many games left and you always want to finish on a high because that can kick-start you into a good start for next season.

"We have to concentrate on picking ourselves up after the disappointment at Exeter so we are ready to go and get three points at Yeovil.

"Three points is a must because the aim is for us to finish the season as high up in the league as we can."

The manner of defeat at Exeter left Trollope disappointed and determined to right the wrongs that have seen his side pick up just one point from their last two games.

An upturn in form had seen the Pirates embark on an impressive four-game unbeaten run – but, after exceeding expectations with four goals at Swindon, the blank at Exeter was the second in successive games.

Trollope was particularly annoyed by the lacklustre way that his side started a game which ended in defeat in the 90th minute when James Dunne headed in a Ryan Harley corner.

"Lennie (Lawrence, director of football) and Trolls had a bit of a go at half-time and told us to buck our ideas up," said Jones. "We were going through the motions a bit. I think we improved after the break but you can't stroll through a game and expect to win it.

"It was disappointing to lose the game like that right at the end. We have worked hard to limit the amount of crosses and shots against us and to let in a goal because of a stupid mistake is disappointing.

"It was a bit like the game against Tranmere where we created some chances but just didn't punish our opponents. We just need to be a little bit more ruthless because we are creating chances. If we weren't, then that would be a real worry."

Jones extended his loan spell until the end of the season earlier this week and has proved a useful acquisition at left-back.

Trollope is expected to make an attempt to make the Wolves man's Memorial Stadium stay a more permanent arrangement when the player's contract at Molineux expires in the summer.

"I am thouroughly enjoying my time here and I get on really well with the manager and Lennie," added Jones. "I feel as though I have settled in very quickly and am loving the chance to get regular games.

"I'm out of contract at the end of the season and the likelihood is that I will not be staying at Wolves. I just want to keep enjoying my football for now and I'll think about next season over the summer."
