Gilroy is an instant hero for Weston-super-Mare
Dave Gilroy became an instant hit with the Weston fans as he scored a hat-trick to record their third Blue Square South win of the season.
Gilroy, who has joined on loan from Newport, was the last Weston player to score a hat-trick – against Stafford Rangers in the Southern Premier League in April 2005.
Winless Lewes were first to show, with Scott Manning testing home goalkeeper Kevin Sawyer on 11 minutes, but from his clearance, Scott Bartlett made ground on the right and his cross was met by Gilroy, who beat Rikki Banks from six yards.
As Lewes came back, skipper Chris Breach was just over with an unmarked header from Dave Wheeler's free-kick and then Jack Walder had an effort beaten away.
The Lewes pressure paid off on 35 minutes when Sawyer blocked another Walder effort, only for Fred Foreman to score from the rebound.
Two minutes into the second half, Weston regained the lead when loan signing from Torquay United Ben Joyce burst through on the left and set up Gilroy to score from close range.
Six minutes later, Gilroy added his third when he got on the end of Jack Compton's low cross from the left.
To their credit, Lewes tried hard to come back and Tom Parrinello had to clear off his line from Andy Pearson, who did better a minute later when he beat Sawyer with a header from Ross Sutton's cross.
