Joyce in a race to sign for Weston-super-Mare

Friday, October 02, 2009, 07:00

BLUE SQUARE SOUTH: Weston-super-Mare manager Andy Gurney is hoping to complete the loan signing of striker Ben Joyce from Torquay United in time for him to make his debut in Saturday's vital home game against fellow strugglers St Albans City.

Gurney is looking for Joyce to put away their chances which has been lacking in Weston's play so far this season.

There are injury worries for Gurney with Clayton Fortune (hamstring), Marvin Brown (hamstring), Marc McGregor (calf) and Craig Rand (hamstring) facing late fitness tests.

● Bath City boss Adie Britton is hoping to bring an end to Newport County's long unbeaten run when the two sides meet at Spytty Park tomorrow (3pm).

High-flying County are in second place and have not been beaten in 18 games.

Sido Jombati and Mark Badman should return to the City midfield after missing the FA Cup win at Willand, but Sekani Simpson is still struggling with a hamstring problem.

Chris Holland (knee) and Matt Coupe (suspension) definitely miss out.

Weston-super-Mare

Weston comes from the Anglo-Saxon for the west tun or settlement. Weston's oldest structure is Worlebury camp, on Worlebury Hill, dating from the Iron Age.
Early in the 19th century, Weston-super-Mare was a small windswept village of about 30 houses behind the sand dunes which had been created as an early sea wall after the Bristol Channel floods of 1607.
Weston owes its growth and prosperity to the Victorian boom in seaside holidays. The first hotel was built in 1808 which is now the Royal Hotel.
Isambard Kingdom Brunel and his family lived in Weston for a number of months whilst he was supervising the construction of the Bristol and Exeter Railway.
The Grand Pier was opened in 1904 after local traders were unhappy that visitors were not coming as far as the centre of Weston-super-Mare. On July 28, 2008, the pavilion at the end of the Grand Pier was completely destroyed by a fire.
