Dedicated nurse hikes two hours through snow

Monday, February 09, 2009, 09:07

Nurse Christine Perry hiked through the snow for two hours from Highridge to the city centre to get to work.

Assistant chief nurse at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (UHBristol), Christine Perry, pulled on the gear she usually wears for mountain walking so that she could get to work at the headquarters in Marlborough Street during the heavy snow.

And when she arrived rather than settling down to her desk job as director of infection prevention and control, Ms Perry changed into a nurse's uniform and headed onto the wards to help with patient care while other staff struggled in.

She trained in 1977 but it has been 15 years since Ms Perry's work involved direct nursing.

Ms Perry said: "There was quite deep snow until I got nearer town and I saw lots of cars that had got stuck.

"It was quite difficult this morning and it is lucky I have done some mountain walking and have got all my gear."
