We won't let it fizzle out now, says Cheltenham Town boss

Boss Martin Allen insists he will not allow Cheltenham Town's season to fizzle out despite their relegation being as good as sealed by Saturday's 1-0 home defeat at home to Leyton Orient.

The Robins' five match unbeaten run was ended by Dean Morgan's 25th minute strike, leaving them 13 points from safety – effectively 14 with their inferior goal difference – with only 18 left to play for.

They are likely to be mathematically down by the end of the Easter weekend and Allen conceded his team's fate is now sealed, but remains determined to avoid finishing rock bottom.

"Everyone said it was going to fizzle out a few weeks ago, but it hasn't and it won't," Allen said.

"It's been pretty special and the support, home and away, has been fantastic. I don't want to be bottom of the league and I don't think we deserve to be there because performances have been pretty good."

Allen admitted his team failed to reach the high standards they had shown in the previous five matches, during a poor quality match against Orient.

"It was frustrating because we didn't play at the same level as we have recently and I don't know why," he said.

"I suppose with young, inexperienced players we are going to get some ups and downs. We had a go in the second half, but we were a bit edgy and we couldn't get it going."

Allen was left to reflect on another refereeing decision that went against his side, who felt they should have been awarded a 75th minute penalty for handball against James Smith from Andy Gallinagh's cross.

"It was a blatant penalty, but we have had that on numerous occasions home and away this season," Allen said.

" His (Smith's) hands were above his head in the 18-yard box and it hit both of them and we could have equalised with five minutes to go.

"The fourth official said it was blatant, their manager and bench said the same and everyone in the ground could see it was a clear penalty."

Winger David Hutton, who will be released by Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season, made his debut for Cheltenham and Allen said he is a possible signing for next season.

"He has been sharp in training and I thought he was terrific," he said.
