Two off as Yeovil suffer home defeat to Southend
Schofield walked for a rash tackle as frustration boiled over while Roberts was dismissed for dissent having previously been booked.
The Glovers went down to a first-half penalty from Lee Barnard and a late clincher from Hal Robson-Kanu.
Yeovil had enjoyed most of the play in the first half but trailed to the visitors' one shot on target.
And after the break they continued to dominate but could not find a way through the Southend defence until after Robson-Kanu scored.
Schofield's 87th-minute strike offered hope but only proved to be a consolation.
Manager Russell Slade had sprang a pre-match surprise by handing a full Yeovil league debut to centre-half Aaron Brown, preferring him to Terrell Forbes.
Gavin Tomlin, another player recalled to the team, had the first shot for the Glovers after collecting a Schofield pass but his low effort skidded just wide from 20 yards.
And Tomlin came closer still on 12 minutes when Lee Peltier lobbed in a cross and Tomlin's volley forced a good save from Adam Federici at his near post.
But the visitors won a penalty after 22 minutes when Alex Revell slid a pass through to Barnard, who was brought down by Nathan Jones. Barnard got up to beat Asmir Begovic from 12 yards.
Yeovil almost hit back when some fine play on the right from Schofield saw hime tee up Roberts but the midfielder placed his shot just too high.
Then Roberts flighted in a free kick that Brown nodded towards the bottom corner but Federici dived to his left to push behind.
And another set piece in stoppage time saw Tomlin square the ball across the box but Brown just failed to reach it for a tap-in.
After the break Roberts forced another save from Federici, as the Australian pushed the ball behind for a corner. And good play from Schofield and Lee Peltier saw Paul Warne fire straight at the keeper after 57 minutes.
Yeovil's pressure was almost continual and Jones almost made amends for his foul when his curling free-kick came back off the bar.
Southend's second goal came on the break after good play from Kevin Betsy set up Reading youngster Robson-Kanu to fire a brilliant low shot past Begovic from the edge of the box.
Yeovil hit back straight away with a superb run and cross from the left by substitute Andre McCollin, who squared for Schofield to net a tap-in at the far post.
