Swindon Town bring in a mind coach to help end losing home run

Tuesday, October 21, 2008, 08:00

Swindon Town boss Maurice Malpas has turned to a sports hypnotherapist in a bid to end his side's losing streak at the County Ground.

The Daily Press understands that the players held sessions with fully qualified master hypnotist Peter Gilmour as Malpas attempts to end a five-game losing streak on home-soil when the Robins entertain Northampton this evening.

Gilmour, who is also described as a 'mind strength' coach, has used his methods with some success on tennis players and golfers and worked with the players both individually and as part of a group session after training yesterday.

Gloucestershire-based Gilmour was drafted in at League One rivals Cheltenham Town by former manager John Ward to help them as they battled relegation two seasons ago.

Ward was impressed with Gilmour's impact after his arrival coincided with an upturn in form following an eight-game losing streak.

The Robins avoided the drop and Gilmour continued to work with the players at Whaddon Road until Ward left for Carlisle last year.

"You can get carried away by the titles, but it is basically just psychology," Ward said at the time – after his side had lost only two games in 11 outings following Gilmour's arrival.

"People will rubbish it, but all I would say is that you shouldn't criticise something until you have tried it."

Malpas has injury concerns over goalkeeper Peter Brezovan and midfielder Lee Peacock ahead of tonight's clash.

Brezovan turned an ankle against Southend on Saturday and looks unlikely to feature after struggling with the complaint in training.

Peacock aggravated his hamstring problem at Roots Hall and looks set to miss out, with either Craig Easton or Lilian Nalis expected to return in midfield.

Meanwhile, defender Jamie Vincent has been able to participate in a running session for the first time since going under the surgeon's knife to correct a knee injury.

The left-back has failed to feature at all for Swindon Town so far this season but could be available for selection again in three weeks.
