Swindon Town boss Wilson still keen to add new faces

Swindon Town boss Danny Wilson insists that a recent upturn in results has not curbed an enthusiasm to add new players to his squad.

Wilson has made four signings since replacing Maurice Malpas at the turn of the year and continues to trawl the loan market to strengthen his side's bid to climb away from the wrong end of League One.

The manager insists that his current crop of players are good enough to ward off the threat of relegation after embarking on an impressive four-game unbeaten run – but also believes that they need the 'challenge' provided by the introduction of new faces to maintain their recent success.

Wilson said: "The players we have here are good enough to keep us up if push comes to shove. The arrivals of Gordon Greer and Hal Robson-Kanu, though, have shown what a spark a couple of fresh faces can have.

"We have slightly turned the tables in terms of our recent form but we still need players to push us over the line and turn the draws into wins. I'll keep trying to bring players in to better the squad because it brings out the best in the lads we already have here.

"If I am complacent and start thinking that everything is fine, the players might take their foot off the gas. I want to keep challenging them and if that means bringing players in we will do that.

"The results are starting to improve but you have to strive to get better. The players have to understand that and the challenge of competing with new faces will keep them on top of their game."

Wilson is 'almost certain' that the loan spells of both Greer and Robson-Kanu will be extended before their initial deals end next week and was still awaiting the outcome of several inquiries ahead of today's clash with Scunthorpe United at the County Ground.

"We'll not stop looking," Wilson added. "We are pestering the life out of other managers and eventually they will get sick of us phoning and give us a player or two now and again."

Town take on the promotion-chasing Scunthorpe on the back of draws at Oldham, Millwall and Leicester. The three points have done little to lift Town away from the relegation mire, but Wilson said: "I agree the results don't look massive because we haven't won the games.

"Within the camp, however, they have come as a massive boost. It has just reinforced the players' belief in themselves and that can only help improve performances."

Town face a Scunthorpe side suffering from a run of inconsistent form and Wilson is hoping his side will be able to capitalise and extend their own unbeaten run to five games.

"Some of the top teams get a bit nervous and edgy around this part of the season because they can see the finishing line and need to get over it.

"That's when you see one or two results go the way that the bookies don't expect and I would like to think that will be the case this weekend.

"Not many sides will be coming here expecting to collect three points on the back of our last few performances. I am expecting quite an open game because we will have to go at them and try and put them on the backfoot."

Greer (groin) and Robson-Kanu (hamstring) are doubtful but Lee Peacock could be back in contention. The midfielder returned to training on Thursday after missing the last four games with a back injury.
