Man threatens to throw himself off building in Bath

Thursday, August 28, 2008, 14:02

A bare-chested man was threatening to throw himself off a city centre building in Bath today.

The man was also seen throwing objects from the top of the building at the corner of Hotbath Street and Westgate Buildings.

Armed officers from Avon and Somerset Police were on the scene along with staff from Avon Fire and Rescue and ambulance crews.

A large area of the city centre was cordoned off by police dealing with the incident, which is understood to have followed attempts to arrest the man in the city centre.

The incident started shortly after 12.30pm this afternoon when the man was spotted on top of the the Hotbath Gallery.

Witnesses on the ground said the man was asking to see his son and had threatened to throw himself off the building if his demands were not met.

A woman was let through the police barriers.

Staff at Future Publishing, which employs more than 800 people in the city, have been told to stay inside their offices at Westgate Buildings until further notice.

A crowd of around 70 people had gathered at the spot.
