Role 'raised red flag' for Mark

Mark Wahlberg has admitted he initially had doubts about starring in his new film Max Payne.

Speaking at the movie's Hollywood premiere, the actor said the idea of making a flick based on a video game "raised a red flag" with him at first.

He explained: "Well, I read the script first, then I went back and checked out the game because I was a little nervous.

"It raised a red flag for me to be honest, because the games I grew up playing had no story whatsoever, but games have changed quite a bit since I was a kid."

Mark - who attended the premiere with his partner Rhea Durham - is confident fans of the dark shoot 'em up game won't be disappointed with the crime thriller.

"[It stays] very true but it also takes it to another level," said the 37-year-old. "I know the die-hard gamers are going to be satisfied and I think we did them justice."

The star added that he relished the chance to get in touch with his darker side.

"I'm a glutton for punishment, I like to go to a dark place, I have a lot of real life experience I can draw on and to put it to good use is therapeutic at times," he said.
