I wanted Bristol Rovers job, says Gillingham boss Martin Allen
Gillingham boss Martin Allen has revealed how he rang Bristol Rovers chairman Nick Higgs and 'begged' him for the manager's job last year.
Allen watched his League Two leaders secure a 2-0 victory at the Memorial Stadium this afternoon following goals from Chris Whelpdale and Deon Burton to condemn Rovers boss John Ward to his first defeat since succeeding Mark McGhee last month.
The Gillingham boss, however, believes Rovers have enough about them to climb away from danger between now and the end of the season and he added: "I was pleased to get the victory because Bristol Rovers were absolutely superb. You could tell they played well when you heard the supporters' reaction at half time.
"They were 2-0 down and every Bristol Rovers fan clapped their players off. That doesn't happen too often does it?

"I don't know what it is about this place, but there is something special about the club. I rang the chairman and begged him to give me the job when I was out of work last year.
"Nick Higgs didn't return my call, God bless him, but I would have loved it because there is something about the passion of the supporters and this club that I really respect. I really hope Rovers stay up and they certainly will do if they play like that every week."
