Your views: An arena for Bristol by 2016?
The issue of an arena in Bristol really got you talking on ThisisBristol.
The Post revealed earlier this month that the city could get its long-awaited indoor arena within the next four years.
The 12,000-seater concert venue would be built on derelict land at the back of Temple Meads station at a cost of up to £80 million and would be one of the biggest in the country.

Why are we building more shop units when the city is full of empty shops? And why are we using public money to do it ? Surely this will just suck more business out of the city centre and leave it as even more of a ghost town. Why not just build lots of houses there as that is what we are short of ? We are constantly being told that our parks need to be sold for housing. Why not just build lots of houses on this site ?”

And Georges1974 had a suggestion for the planners: “Just an idea, why don't we just try and get our hands on the 'temporary' basketball arena that was used at the olympics and give it a new home.”

“I think having an arena in Bristol is a terrible idea - a complete waste of valuable land given all the other pressures we have. And, next to Temple Meads is the worst possible location, squandering a place next to a major transport hub for occasional big events, when it could be convenient on a daily basis for hundreds of commuters if offices were built there. Which do you think will have the most impact on traffic congestion, day in, day out?
If we must have one, if we simply can't tolerate the short hop on the train to Cardiff, then let's put it somewhere sensible, like out by the new football stadium in Long Ashton - plenty of space to do it properly.”

“I'm really behind this especially as the proposal puts it in the logical place, ie: right next to a major rail station. If we can link it up effectively with the rest of Bristol's rail and bus network then that would be just fine. Just a thought, would it be possible to use the vast space occupied by the fruit market for out of business hours parking. It really is a big site and not far away from the proposed site. Furthermore traffic coming in from the South would have no need to get caught up in the roundabout next to Fowlers Motorcycles as there are other main inroads. There was a proposal to remodel that giratory but all I can envisage there is traffic chaos and misery for motorists. Not to mention more millions which we can ill afford with the major cuts to the next budget. I am presuming that we will get a large amount of capital from London along with the sponsors to minimise the cost of realising this project. None of this money should come from our revenue expenditure. This new project will have positive effects for the building industry and seems more worthwhile than more office blocks. Let's make this happen this time.
