Police officers in the South Gloucestershire area have warned youngsters to keep out of trouble at Halloween.

They visited schools before the holidays, as well as youth groups, as part of an operation to make sure those who want to mark the event can do so without causing problems for others.

They have also worked with shops, which have agreed not to sell eggs and flour to children, and distributed 'No Trick or Treat Here' posters to vulnerable residents.

Steve Jeffries, South Gloucestershire's district superintendent, said: "October 31 has traditionally been one of the busiest nights of the year for police across the UK, with the potential for trick or treating to get out of hand, leading to anti-social behaviour, damage and nuisance.

"Over the past few years we have been working hard with the council and others to try to tackle these problems as part of Operation Relentless, and we hope we will see a reduction in complaints this year.

"What may seem like harmless fun to one person can be distressing for more vulnerable people.

"We want young people to have fun, but they must realise they will have to take responsibility for their actions if they go too far."

He also said parents should play their part to make sure their children do not call at the homes of anyone displaying the posters.

Officers, special constables and PCSOs will be patrolling on foot, bike and by car at Halloween to deal with any anti-social behaviour. Any children found with eggs, flour or alcohol will have it confiscated, while anyone over 16 could be stopped from going to certain areas for up to 48 hours to prevent alcohol-related crime or disorder.
