I had the time of my life, says terminally-ill Hannah

Right-to-die heart girl Hannah Jones said her dying wish to meet Mickey Mouse at Disney World was a dream come true.

Terminally-ill Hannah climbed out of her wheelchair for a special hug and photograph with the cartoon idol she has wanted to meet for more than a decade.

Back home after the fairy-tale holiday with her family in Florida, she described the week spent there as the happiest week of her life.

Hannah, 13, hit the headlines when she rejected a potentially life-saving heart transplant so she could spend her last months at home with her family in Herefordshire.

She told her parents she wanted to meet Mickey Mouse before she died but her dying wish was nearly dashed when 50 insurance companies refused to cover her for the dream trip to the US to meet her cartoon heroes.

But Hannah and her parents Andrew, 43, and Kirsty, 42, brother Oliver, 11, and sister Lucy, 10, were able to go after a mystery benefactor stepped in to underwrite the trip at the last minute.

Back home in Marden, Hannah – who could die at any moment from her heart condition – said meeting Mickey was the highlight of the trip.

She said: "It was a dream come true – one of the happiest days of my life. The journey was tiring but worth it. It was so nice to be there with my family.

"It was amazing, I really enjoyed it. It's so much better than going to the zoo in England.

"We met Mickey and Minnie at the resort. I know they're only people in costumes but I still like them and they signed my autograph book, too.

"We had such a brilliant time. I'll never forget it – I just wish we could have stayed there forever."

Hannah beat leukaemia at the age of five, but suffered heart failure brought on by the chemotherapy.

A transplant would prolong her life but Hannah insisted she could not face any more operations and told doctors to give the heart to somebody else.

One locum doctor disagreed and Hannah staved off a High Court attempt to force her to have the surgery by persuading a Child Protection Officer that she really was mature enough to make such a difficult decision.

With only months left to live, Hannah asked her parents for the trip to Disney World.

But the family feared it would not happen until an anonymous insurance company stumped up £250,000 for £5 million of medical cover.

Speaking in Florida during the trip, dad Andrew said: "It feels emotional knowing it's our first holiday with the six of us together and knowing that it could be our last.

"It means that our enjoyment is tinged with sadness but we're here to make the most of it."

Trudi Beswick, of the charity Caudwell Children, said: "To be able to give them this time together is really rewarding for us."

“Why do the press keep reporting that there was a high court action to 'force' Hannah to have a heart transplant, when nothing of the sort took place?”
