Monday, April 27, 2009, 07:00

A baby Brazilian tapir was born at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm yesterday just in time for the breed's awareness day.

The humbug-striped baby boy was born after a 400-day period and is the first born of the two resident tapirs.

He arrived in time for World Tapir Day, which aims to develop tapir awareness and conservation.

During the last few months, visitors and members from around the world have been watching the zoo farm's webcam waiting for Tara the tapir to give birth.

Head keeper Chris Wilkinson said: "The remote webcam was installed before Christmas following the discovery that Tara was expecting. A slightly dazed baby was on his feet within minutes and is feeding well."
