Giuseppe Licata (Hambrook Driving Range) tried to put on a brave smile after being beaten to the West Region PGA Titleist-Footjoy Young Professionals League by Welshman Matt Griffiths.

Licata led the order of merit going into the final tournament at Bath and he really fancied his chances of winning both the event and the OOM. But Griffiths came in with 65 in the under-30s league to equal the professional course record.

Licata, who was four under after ten holes after starting with three successive birdies, felt he had done enough after shooting a five-under-par 66.

He had a wonderful chance to equal the Welshman's score but missed a six-footer at the last. "I had a feeling I might need that putt to win and that's how it turned out," said Licata, 24, who has been improving rapidly over the past few months. "My goal was to win the order of merit and I really thought I had done enough."

Titleist contracts are awarded to the leading five players. Tom Widley (The Bristol) was a strong contender, but shot 78 to finish sixth.

● Burnham and Berrow assistant Shane Kaye was the shock winner of the opening Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal of the winter season with his first victory as a professional at Stinchcombe Hill.

Kaye, 22, scorched round the Dursley course in four-under-par 64 to win by three shots against an experienced field.

Seniors PGA champion George Ryall (Players) was one of four players on 67. He played some superb approach shots but his putting fell short of Kaye's.

● Tickenham Golf Club offer free golf lessons to youngsters during the autumn half-term holiday. Children from the age of five are welcome on Tuesday and Thursday October 27 and 29 (10am to noon) for pre-booked lessons (Tel 01275 856626).
