No such thing as an English MP
WRITING to an MP in an attempt to engage in the democratic process is, in my opinion, a waste of time and energy. I have been in correspondence with mine on the English Question. Those who read Mike Blundell's excellent letter will be aware that the British government has handed over ever-increasing powers to the devolved governments in Scotland and Wales whilst maintaining its iron grip over the government of England.
There is currently a commission spending vast amounts of English taxpayers' money looking into how this inequity might best be addressed. They will gather evidence from countless people before deciding that the way forward is to have a Grand Committee of English MPs voting on England-only matters. My MP favours this "solution". I put it to him that there is no such thing as an English MP, only British MPs sitting for English constituencies. Westminster and its members are thus British MPs who care only about Britain. Unsurprisingly, he denied this.
The freebies bestowed so generously upon their compatriots by the Scottish and Welsh governments are bankrolled by English taxpayers through the Barnett Formula. If so-called English MPs care so much about England, why have they not put party politics to one side and banded together to scrap the Barnett Formula?
