Goalless draw with Hereford was far from entertaining

MANY 0-0 draws I have seen over the years have been very entertaining, but I can't say the same about Saturday's one with Hereford United.

Some experts seem to think that teams will raise their game when they come to the Memorial Stadium and face Rovers. However, this struggling Hereford side didn't have to do that much to walk away with a point.

It was a very frustrating afternoon. The Blackthorn End fans tried hard to get their favourites to raise their game in the second half, but The Bulls were content to sit back and try and catch us on the break.

They never looked like doing that as we were again the better side, making most of the running without creating many clear-cut chances.

The fans showed their frustration as the surprise withdrawal of Jo Kuffour was greeted with howls of derision. Why hadn't Paul Buckle taken a defender off, or Chris Zebroski for that matter?

Kuffour is clearly not a Buckle favourite. Apparently, he was nearly offloaded to Yeovil before the season started. But, as the visitors gradually retreated into their shell in the second half, we needed a luxury player like Kuffour to find that bit of magic to open the door in a crowded penalty area.

Buckle must decide if Kuffour or Scott McGleish should play alongside Matt Harrold, who deserved the man-of-the-match accolade and was unlucky when a header hit the base of the post. Neither McGleish or Kuffour are wingers and maybe Ben Swallow or Mustapha Carayol should be given a run out wide.

As for Zebroski, known as Zeebo by my friends in the J&C Group enclosure, he has yet to convince me he can do the business. He looks like an awkward Linford Christie, with a bit of pace but without composure on the ball.

In midfield, I felt we looked much more positive with Wayne Brown and Stuart Campbell in tandem, as Matt Gill and Craig Stanley had not imposed themselves on the game.

In fact, the best attacking midfield performance came from Hereford's Harry Pell who had plenty of shots on goal. Why was this promising youngster allowed to slip through our grasp? He is young, and showed lots of potential with us last season. If Hereford could afford him, surely we could have?

To cap a frustrating afternoon for Rovers, Lee Brown should have rounded off another competent performance at left-back by grabbing a last-gasp winner with his diving header at the far post.

But it was not to be, so let's hope we can recapture the Carling Cup form we showed against Watford when we travel east to Leyton Orient tomorrow night.

    “fair assessment.

I think we are all bemused at Zeb, but maybe his seemingly decent performance at LO has confirmed what we all thought... he is a striker, not a winger, and playing him as a striker might bear fruit.

I've never been avle to get to the bottom of the harry pell issue. I swear I read that they had an option on a second season and that they were offering to him to take up that offer. presumably that did not happen becasue if they had made him an offer, and he refused, then surely we would have got a fee for him as an under 24 player? Whatever the truth, it doesn;t take a genius to work out that for him it's better to be an almost guaranteed choice at the Bulls, than to battle with about 8 midfielders here.”
