They stood by and did nothing

I AM so thankful that Filton clinic is to remain open. My elderly parents were devastated when they heard the news that it was going to close.

They were told by a neighbour who had heard it through the grapevine.

They both went to a council meeting, but the councillor for Filton said they had known about the closure, but didn't realise it would have meant a total closure.

This is extremely short sighted as podiatory has moved to Patchway which my parents relied upon and can't travel far.

I feel we have been let down by these councillors who are supposed to be watching out for our best interests and instead were happy to stand by and watch a clinic that has been in our community for generations, to close.

They just don't seem to have a grip on what local people expect of them and why should it be that people have to protest before they do anything?

They are happy to try to take credit for bus stops and crossings but these things are planned for and are nothing to do with them.

They quite happily stand to have their picture taken where they think it will win them votes but don't want to seem to get their hands dirty on things that need a lot of time to fight for.

In Filton, our main councillor Roger Hutchinson seems far more interested in introducing minority based sports (boules courts and cycle tracks) which have cost taxpayers a huge amount to build and maintain and yet only his team use.

The income the council get from these facilities is a big fat zero.

It is a big relief that Filton clinic will stay, but no thanks goes to our councillors who have other priorities in raising their profiles.

People should remember this when it comes to voting for councillors who should really care about doing the right things for their community. At the next elections instead of voting for a party, vote for the individual and what they can do for you and not themselves.

“Luckily the NHS reversed their decision but no thanks to councillors of 2009 for doing nothing on this (Cllrs Hutchinson, Freeguard and Bell) who completely missed the threat to the clinic. Even the "newer" councillors didnt act until residents found out about the closure. Only when they became aware that this was to become a PR nightmare did they get off their backsides.”

“Thank you to Councillor Ian Scott for his support in keeping Filton Clinic open, Podiatry is now back at Filton Clinic. There will be a review of current services, and suggestions of which new services local people require at the next Filton council meeting on 28th February @ 7.30.
The decision to close the clinic was taken back in 2009 so it is worth remembering that the newer Filton councillors were not part of this hair brained scheme.”
