Bristol shoplifter 'couldn't be bothered to queue

Monday, August 31, 2009, 07:00

A single mother who admitted stealing a pair of shoes and some nail varnish from a Bristol shop, handed in a £5 note she found while waiting for her case at Bristol Magistrates' Court.

Clare Day, 23, pleaded guilty to stealing the shoes and two bottles of nail varnish from New Look, in Cabot Circus, on August 14.

But while Day, of Weavers Mill Close, St George, was waiting for her hearing at Bristol Magistrates' Court, she found a £5 note on the floor, and handed it to the court clerk.

Day, in court with her one-year-old baby, had already bought a large quantity of clothes in the store, when she found a pair of shoes she liked, but "couldn't be bothered" to join the long queue.

She put the shoes in her buggy, while her child held two bottles of nail varnish, as she left the shop.

When detained by security, Day said she didn't know her child was carrying the nail varnish. The goods were recovered by the shop.

Day was given a one-year conditional discharge.
