Glanford Park record is not bad for Bristol Rovers

Sunday, February 08, 2009, 15:15

It's a little-known fact, but Bristol Rovers supporters have witnessed more wins at Scunthorpe's Glanford Park (three) since it opened in 1988 than they did at the Old Show Ground (two), where the Iron played from 1895.

Scunthorpe joined the Football League in 1950 but Rovers did not travel to face them until the 1958-59 season.

The Pirates had walloped their visitors 4-0 at Eastville earlier in the season, a fitting way for the home fans among the 24,273 gate to see their new £76,000 North Stand.

Those faithful Rovers fans that did travel north on January 3, 1959, would now be able to compare their new structure in Bristol with Scunthorpe's new East Stand, which was the first in Britain with a cantilever roof, meaning there were no pillars obstructing supporters' views.

However, the game proved something of an anti-climax. Despite Scunthorpe having scored in their previous 21 matches and Bert Tann's Rovers scoring in 18 consecutive games, the match ended 0-0.

The following season's encounter on March 5, 1960, made up for it as Rovers won 4-3. Geoff Bradford put the visitors ahead but Scunthorpe scored twice to take the lead, only to be pegged back by Ray Mabbutt's only goal of the campaign.

The star of the show, however, was Ian Hamilton, who chose the perfect time to score his first goals for Bristol Rovers, his second coming in the last 10 minutes.

Rovers' second win at the Old Show Ground came on April 7, 1973, with goals from the dynamic duo of "Smash and Grab", Bruce Bannister and Alan Warboys.

The Pirates' final visit to the ground was on February 25, 1984, when a brace from Steve White earned the blue-and-white quarters a 2-2 draw.

Scunthorpe relocated to Glanford Park in 1988, but it was 11 years before Rovers first played there. However, they made a winning start, a Jason Roberts brace securing a 2-0 win on September 4, 1999.

Rovers' winning run continued on August 18, 2001, with a 2-1 success care of first-half goals from Nathan Ellington and Ross Weare.

The third Rovers win at Glanford Park came on the opening day of the 2003-04 season, when Adam Barrett and Lee Hodges both opened their accounts for the club in another 2-1 success.
