Steve Smith column: Bristol Rovers looking for fourth successive win over Latics

Sunday, February 01, 2009, 23:16

Bristol Rovers visit Boundary Park on Tuesday night looking to extend a run of three consecutive wins over Oldham Athletic.

Goals before the break from Rickie Lambert and Chris Lines earned the Pirates a 2-0 victory at the Memorial Stadium back in October.

Last season, Paul Trollope's men won both games by the only goal of the match. Craig Disley was the Pirates' last-minute hero at the Memorial Stadium, while a rare Joe Jacobson goal earned the Gas their victory in the North West.

Oldham Athletic joined the Second Division in 1907/08 season along with Fulham and narrowly missed out on promotion.

This was finally achieved in 1910 and top-flight football for the Latics lasted until relegation came at the end of the 1922-23 season.

There would be 12 years in the old second division before relegation came again, this time to the Division Three North at the end of 1934-35, where they stayed until they claimed their first piece of domestic silverware by winning the Three North title in 1953, one point ahead of Port Vale.

This coincided with Bristol Rovers winning the Three South championship with an average crowd of 23,400.

The first league meeting between the two clubs at Boundary Park ended in a 0-0 draw.

The Pirates established a foothold in the second tier by finishing ninth, while Oldham finished bottom. It wasn't until 1963 that both clubs enjoyed a concerted run in the league, that began with a 1-0 win for Oldham at Eastville in August and then a 2-2 draw in December.

Rovers got their first league win at Boundary Park on October 14, 1964, when a brace of goals from Ian Hamilton gave Bert Tann's side both points before a crowd of 7,777.

During the relegation dog-fight of 1974-75, Rovers travelled to Oldham in ninth place in Division Two and claimed two precious points in a 4-3 win. But for the second half of the season Rovers' early form slipped away as they finished 19th.

The Pirates grabbed an equaliser from Jamie Cureton's spot-kick with three minutes left in a 4-4 draw in August 1997.

Rovers' 4-1 win in February 2000 saw them go top of League Two.

In response to Mr P Iles' letter last week, Bristol City's attendance for their FA Cup fourth-round tie with Blackpool on January, 24 1958 was 42,594.
