Full steam ahead for ss Great Britain funnel maintenance work
Scaffolding has been erected on the ss Great Britain as conservation and maintenance work is being undertaken on the ship’s funnel.
Maintenance staff have also set about the unenviable task of repainting the entire 322ft long iron hull on Brunel’s famous ship.

Maintenance work is being carried out on the ss Great Britain
A spokeswoman for the ss Great Britain Trust said: “This is all part of the ongoing conservation and maintenance of the ship.
“In 1843 the funnel was originally designed to take smoke away from the furnaces. Today it still functions in a similar manner – extracting gases from the galley and the dehumidification plant on board.

“Eura Conservation Ltd along with the trust’s technical services team have been cleaning and painting the funnel to ensure it is completely water tight, ready for all weather conditions. At the same time, the flying bridge or captain’s stage is being painted.
“The team have also started to clean and repaint the entire visible part of the 322ft long iron hull – one of the slightly larger projects on the list for this year.”
