For years he has been standing above the entrance of the Dominion Theatre in London's West End.

But now the 15ft-high Freddie Mercury artwork is heading to Bristol.

It will help promote the musical We Will Rock You – using Queen's music – that comes to the Hippodrome in September for two months.

And managers of the Hippodrome want to know what you think is the best place to put Freddie.

They say they are not under pressure to find him a home but they do want a decent location for this good old-fashioned lover boy.

Hippodrome manager Gary Roden said: "The statue of Freddie Mercury is an iconic image.

"But it's probably too big to go on our canopy in front of the theatre.

"So that's why we're looking for places to put it in the city.

"We want to put it in the most iconic location possible, so that the most people possible will see it and take notice.

"If we can work with a partner, that would be the best thing.

"It would be great to have it somewhere like @Bristol, in Cabot Circus or even near the Clifton Suspension Bridge. I'm sure that there's somewhere in Bristol.

"It will be great for locals and tourists alike, and the two months that We Will Rock You is in town, it will definitely be a big draw.

"We certainly don't want to miss out on the statue coming to Bristol."

We Will Rock You, written by comedian Ben Elton and based on the music of legendary rock band Queen, is coming to Bristol from September 16 to October 31.

Tickets for the show go on general sale on September 15, but Evening Post readers who collect special tokens in the newspaper will be able to buy them from September 1.

Scripted by Elton, who collaborated with Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, the story is set on earth 300 years in the future.

Everyone wears the same clothes, watches the same films and thinks the same thoughts. Music is also generated by one company, and musical instruments are banned.

But resistance comes in the form of a man called Galileo, a hero who will help the world break free.

Elton rose to prominence in the early Eighties when he co-wrote the sitcom The Young Ones – much of which was set in Bristol.
