A few miles away at Churchill Cross, the Mendip Vale Club are staging their aptly-named Winterhead observation only event in the Churchill Rocks group at Churchill Cross. The club are catering for all grades of competitor from seasoned experts to raw novices, and entries will be accepted at the start.

South West Centre champion Joe Baker begins his defence of the title in the West of England club's prestigious Knill Cup event at Ilsington, on the lower slopes of Dartmoor.

This event is always extremely popular and by midweek more than 100 had signed on the dotted line and a further 80 is expected by the end of the week.

National ace Ricky Wiggins looks like being Baker's main rival in the three-lap 12-section event.

The line-up also includes Nick and Jimmy Baker, George and Rob Pollard, Nick Life, Tom Hooper plus several top flight aces from the Cornwall Centre following the postponement of the Camel Vale club's enduro at Par.

More than a dozen sidecar crews will be in action a mile or so from the solo venue at The Grove including several from the Bristol area, namely David Tuck and Steve Chandler, Matt Sparks and Jamie Howe and Andy Scrivens and Martin Lawford.

The death has occurred of well-known BSSA club member Vic Watts. He was passenger to the late Alan Brown in trials and enduros for many years and he also rode in grass track events with Tony Vowles in his early years.

His funeral takes place at Westerleigh Crematorium on Monday, January 28 (1pm).
