VIKRAM Banerjee marked his first County Championship appearance of the season with a five-wicket haul as Gloucestershire's revival continued with a second successive win.

Banerjee also played his part with the bat as he and Gemaal Hussain helped James Franklin add valuable runs in the morning session.

Then, set 300 to win, Surrey could only muster 221 as left-arm spinner Banerjee, with 5-74, led another impressive Gloucestershire bowling display.

But for Surrey, it was a third defeat in four matches this season, and that is bitterly disappointing for a county who recruited heavily in the close-season.

Stuart Meaker returned the best figures by a Surrey seamer at the Brit Oval for four years, but there was little else to please the hosts yesterday.

Gloucestershire were only 190 ahead when they resumed on 139-7 but Surrey's hopes of finishing them off quickly were dashed by New Zealand all-rounder Franklin.

He shared stands of 42 with Banerjee and 70 with Hussain before he ran out of partners eight runs short of his 11th first-class century.

He had faced 133 balls and hit a six and nine fours.

Banerjee hung around for 16 overs, before he was caught at backward square leg off a short ball from Jade Dernbach, and Hussain had been there 20 overs when he was leg before to Meaker.

That made Meaker (5-48) the first Surrey seamer to take five wickets in an innings in a Championship match at the Oval since Mohammad Akram took 6-34, when Gloucestershire were beaten by an innings four years ago.

It was a different story this time. Surrey got off to a bad start when Gareth Batty was caught behind off Steve Kirby and their hopes of winning virtually disappeared when Mark Ramprakash went the same way against Franklin.

Arun Harinath was caught at short leg off Banerjee, Rory Hamilton-Brown chipped Jon Lewis to short mid-wicket and Usman Afzaal was bowled trying to hit Banerjee over midwicket.

Chris Schofield, caught behind off Hussain, and Meaker, caught at slip off Banerjee, followed quickly as Surrey slumped to 109-7.

Steven Davies (54), Chris Tremlett (31), Iftikhar Anjum (29) and Dernbach (13no) mounted a late rally, but it was not enough.
