Hull City sold, Graham Poll banned

1998: Hull City owner David Lloyd sold the struggling Division Three club to a Sheffield-based consortium.

1998: Former England captain Terry Butcher put his career mementoes up for auction in Stirling. His 1989 sports personality of the year souvenir sold for around £400.

2001: Crystal Palace refused to accept the resignation of manager Steve Bruce, who had been linked with the vacancy at Birmingham. Bruce eventually took up the Birmingham post in December after a long stand-off.

2004: Aston Villa were charged by the Premier League with making an illegal approach for Southampton and England striker James Beattie.

2005: England's top referee, Graham Poll, was disciplined for an incident which occurred at a pre-season training camp for officials. Poll was banned for two matches for an incident in Aldershot, the details of which were not disclosed.

2006: New Zealand were stripped of the two Gillette Tri-Nations points won against Great Britain in the 18-14 win in Christchurch for fielding an ineligible player, Nathan Fien. Fien was also banned from playing for the Kiwis after it was revealed his only genetic connection to New Zealand was that his great grandmother was born in Wanganui.

2008: Lewis Hamilton finished fifth in the Brazilian Grand Prix to win the Formula One drivers' championship.
