Matt Withers: Sloppy mistakes and a lack of loyalty at Bristol City

Monday, November 30, 2009, 10:00

I cannot believe what I witnessed at Ashton Gate on Saturday.

Following on from a shambles of a defensive display at West Brom, City were once again in a generous mood and conceded three more goals allowing an organised Sheffield United side to leave Ashton Gate with all three points.

Unfortunately, individual mistakes cost us dear at both ends of the fields. We were poor defensively and did not make the most of our opportunities up front.

The opening goal was sloppy, Jamie McAllister needlessly conceded a corner and from the resulting passage of play, Dean Gerken made a poor decision to punch the ball as opposed to putting it behind for a corner and Darius Henderson controlled the ball and hit a half volley into the corner of the net. There was some confusion, as the assistant referee had flagged for an offside, however, controversial referee Andy Hall gave the goal, deciding that Lee Williamson who was in an offside position did not touch the ball or interfere with the play.

Jamie McCombe had a torrid time and at this moment, is struggling to reach the levels required in the Championship. After last weeks display, I would have rested McCombe but assume he was preferred to Liam Fontaine or Lewin Nyatanga to counter the aerial threat of Henderson.

There is no doubt that McCombe will get the majority of blame for the defeat, however, had Nicky Maynard and Danny Haynes been nearer their best, City should easily have won the game.

At 2-0 down at half time, I couldn't see a way back for City and was also surprised that Gary Johnson neglected to make any changes at the break. My friend Trina could see a way back but felt we would need three for a point as in her words "we would give away our usual last -minute goal".

Many in the stands were still celebrating Saborio's equaliser when more naïve defending gifted Sheffield the points. I wonder if Trina did the lottery. Questions should once again be asked of the defence. Gary Johnson wants an answer as to why his side can't see a game out. Each player has to look at themselves and do better.

Final word has to go on the Adriano Basso affair. I find the Brazilians lack of loyalty to the manager and club astonishing. I would not play him again.
