Key Gloucestershire duo agree new contracts

Wednesday, July 30, 2008, 11:30

ALEX Gidman and Steve Kirby have given Gloucestershire a major boost ahead of the Cheltenham cricket festival.

Former England A star Gidman has finally ended speculation regarding his future by committing himself to the county for the next three years. Out of contract at the end of the season, Gloucestershire's vice-captain was being pursued by Warwickshire and Surrey.

Meanwhile, pace bowler Kirby put pen to paper on a new long-term deal this morning.

And Gloucestershire have incoming director of cricket John Bracewell to thank for both deals.

Gidman was set to throw in his lot with Warwickshire after meeting with Bears chief Ashley Giles and being offered a reported six-figure salary last month.

But he underwent a massive change of heart following talks with New Zealander Bracewell, who is scheduled to take up a four-year post with the county in April.

Gidman confirmed: “I'm excited about working with John Bracewell again and I'm very pleased to have signed a new contract with the club.”

He added: “I believe that John is the right man for my cricket.

“The next couple of years will determine if I can play for England and, having worked with him before, I'm confident he'll bring out the best in me.

“Although I haven't worked with him for a little while, he knows my game pretty well and I'm looking forward to re-igniting our relationship.

“I think he's the best man for this cricket club and, all in all, this is the best deal for me.

“I feel that with the right investment in players and the continued excellent support we get from fans and members, we can start to climb the ladder once again.”

Kirby had also been approached by Warwickshire, and said the decision whether to stay or go was the toughest of his life.

“I am absolutely delighted to be signing a long term contract at Gloucestershire,” he said.

“This has not been any easy decision. In fact, it is the toughest decision of my life.

“A major factor has been my family. They are very settled in Bristol and Glos are a strong family unit and look after them very well.

“The other massive factor has been the appointment of John Bracewell as director of cricket. I am really looking forward to working with him.

“I am still massively ambitious to play for England and I do feel he can help me continue to improve.

“With John Bracewell and the club's intent to strengthen the squad, I believe there are exciting times ahead for Gloucestershire.”
