Bristol athletes in contention for Easy Runner award
The county and regional schools' championships offered the perfect stage to impress and the events certainly saw some excellent results for our judges to consider.
As always, the winner will receive a pair of shoes from Easy Runner, Bristol's leading athletics retailer. The winner will be revealed in next Saturday's Evening Post.
The nominations are:
Scott Bajere
The 16-year-old Bristol & West AC sprinter did the double at the Avon Schools Championships, winning the senior boys' 100m (11.43secs) and 200m (22.68secs), the latter a personal best.
At the South West Schools Championships the following week he finished fifth in the 100m (11.20secs), after clocking a PB of 11.1secs in the heats, and sixth in the 200m (23.4secs).
Lily Owsley
The 14-year-old Bristol & West AC runner opened the month with a huge PB for the mile of 4mins 57.29secs – 14 seconds off her previous best – at the Newport BMC.
She then ran another PB by two seconds to win the junior girls' 800m (2:18.95) at the Avon Schools and topped that a week later with a PB of 2:18.7 to win the junior girls' 800m at South West Schools.
Max Cresswell
The Clifton College student did a throws double at the Avon Schools Championships, winning the intermediate boys' javelin (45.30m) and shot (11.54m) titles. The following week he added a huge seven metres to his best with 52.59m for second in the inter boys' javelin at the South West Championships at Exeter Arena, lifting him to 21st in the UK Under-17 rankings. He was also sixth in the shot (11.37m).
Bethan Wakefield
The Backwell athlete did the double at Avon Schools Championships, winning the junior girls' 100m (12.98secs) and long jump (5.13m).
Fourteen-year-old Wakefield took advantage of the favourable conditions at the South West Schools' Championships at the Exeter Arena to smash her PB in the junior girls' long jump with 5.24m. In the 100m she posted a time of 12.7secs for another gold medal.
Matt Parker
The 17-year-old Yate & District AC runner opened month with victory in the Midland Track & Field League Division Three match at the Yate Outdoor Sports Centre clocking 1:56.56, his second fastest time, to help his club to victory.
He then won the senior boys' 800m (1:57.55) at the Avon Schools Championships and following week was runner-up (1:56.8) in the South West Schools Championships.
Matt Norton
The 16-year-old Nailsea School student won the inter boys' hammer (49.48m) at Avon Schools.
The following week, at the South West Schools Championships, he threw a PB of 54.18m to finish in second place and lift him to eighth in the UK Under-17 rankings.
