Three arrested in car crime crackdown

Wednesday, September 09, 2009, 07:00

Three people have been arrested in a crackdown on car crime in South Gloucestershire.

A 20-year-old man was arrested in Speedwell and a stolen Subaru Impreza recovered in the early hours of Monday, September 7.

The car had been taken after a house in Pucklechurch was broken into earlier the same night and the ignition keys taken.

In a separate incident, two 17-year-olds were arrested in Kingswood after being found to be in possession of audio equipment.

The 20-year-old and one of the teenagers were released on bail pending further inquiries. The other youth was released without charge.

Neighbourhood inspector Kevin Thatcher said: "Traditionally we have seen an increase in thefts of and from cars in the autumn. At the moment thieves are also reaching through open windows or letterboxes to take car keys and steal cars.

"These arrests show we're doing our best to target these criminals but motorists can help us deter, catch and convict them.

"Some security measures will discourage thieves. If we arrest a suspect and seize property, we need to prove it is stolen – that's why we need people to register and mark their property."

Throughout September, South Gloucestershire police will be running a Vulnerable Vehicle Scheme, taking details of cars where property has been left on view and write to the registered keeper with crime prevention information. Officers will also be contacting people living in car crime hotspots asking them to report any suspicious activity.
