Bristol walker hot foots it for Children Today

Thursday, November 05, 2009, 07:00

A Southmead man will be walking across hot coals for charity on Bonfire Night, just three days before a gruelling 12 mile trek.

Don Dickinson is set to take part in the fire walk on Thursday to raise money for Children Today, a charity that supports young people with disabilities.

Then on Sunday Mr Dickinson, who works in human resources, will be taking part in the 10th anniversary of the gruelling Sodbury Slog.

The slog is an off-road event through fields, ditches and mudbaths and described as "not for the faint hearted".

This Bonfire Night is also Mr Dickinson's 40th birthday so he will be marking the event in style.

He said: "I've always been curious about fire walks and always wondered how they do it.

"I've looked online at how you have to do it without getting burned, it's about heat transference.

"I've not done anything like this before.

"I hope I don't get burned because I'm doing the Sodbury Slog on Sunday.

"For my birthday this year I have been asking for donations for the firewalk instead of material gifts."

Earlier this year Mr Dickinson ran the Bath Half Marathon for the Red Cross.

There are still places available for the firewalk, which is due to be held at the Tobacco Factory in Southville.

Participants have to raise at least £100 in sponsorship to take part in the event.

Fire walk experts Blaze will be there to help out.

Children Today fundraising manager Emma Fawcett said: "Anyone taking part will find it a tremendous experience and extremely rewarding knowing they are helping disabled children in the local area."
