Former Somerset captain Justin Langer set to help out Hildreth Down Under

Saturday, October 24, 2009, 07:00

Departing Somerset captain Justin Langer is set to help with the coaching of the county's former England Lions batsman James Hildreth Down Under this winter.

Hildreth did not build on his triple century against Warwickshire in the first match of the 2009 season and fell short of 1,000 first-class runs.

Langer, who retired from professional cricket after the Champions League, devised a programme for wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter last winter.

The youngster spent eight weeks in Perth, Western Australia, with Langer's individual coaches and went from 524 Championship runs in 2008 to 1,242 this summer.

Langer, pictured, has firm views on how best to bat. "If you ask me what I am really proud of during my time at Somerset it is how still the batsmen are standing, if you look at the way Craig Kieswetter, Arul Suppiah, James Hildreth to a degree, and Peter Trego," he said.

"For so long, there has been this coaching about trigger movements and to me staying still is the essence of good batting. To me, from a batting mentoring point of view, that is what I am so pleased about."

Hildreth, along with Kieswetter, is also set to visit a 'spin school' in India during the winter in order to improve against the turning ball. Somerset plan to make their Taunton pitches spin more following the signing of Indian slow bowler Murali Kartik as next season's overseas player.

Langer helped transform Somerset from bottom of Division Two of the County Championship in 2006 to become the only team with a realistic chance of winning all four domestic trophies in 2009.

"You would have to ask other people about my greatest achievement at the club, but I am just proud to have scored some runs and been part of a team and a management group with (coach) Andy Hurry and the senior players, like Marcus Trescothick," said Langer.

"I never thought I would see county cricket evolve the way I have seen Somerset evolve and it is nice to have seen the results this year.

"We have had a fantastic year and you couldn't fault our year except that we haven't won the Championship."
