Arul must kick on, says Somerset's Langer

Tuesday, June 30, 2009, 07:00

Somerset captain Justin Langer believes it is time for opener Arul Suppiah to convert his good starts into a century.

The 25-year-old Malaysia-born batsman goes into the Championship match against Yorkshire that starts at Taunton this morning having made one hundred in his first-class career.

Suppiah has made a decent fist of opening the batting this season, but he has not gone on to make a big score.

However, Suppiah is on an upward curve, having made 49 and 50 – his first half-century of the season – in the win against Sussex at Hove two weeks ago.

"Hopefully it will be a real confidence booster for him," said Langer, who saw young Sussex opener Chris Nash make a fine hundred in the same game.

"Now he needs to play an innings like Nash did for Sussex.

"Somewhere down the track he has to go on from his thirties and fifties and hopefully that is not too far away."

Suppiah's orthodox left-arm spin bowling may also be needed against Yorkshire this week.

First choice leg-spinner Max Waller will miss the game with a side strain, so off-spinner Omari Banks could replace him in the starting XI.

Somerset's other alternatives could include a first game of the season for former England paceman Andrew Caddick or a recall for all-rounder Ben Phillips.
