The Post

History

This was a small rural community until 1977, when a chunk of land was developed for housing and businesses as part of Bristol's rapid expansion.

There is an older, central part of the village, but much of it is modern. Based along a stretch of the A431 Bath Road (a Roman road running from Bath to Bristol), Longwell Green sits five miles (8 km) from Bristol and seven miles (11 km) from Bath.

Leisure

On the edge of Longwell Green, in the neighbouring parish of Bitton, is Willsbridge Mill, a restored 19th-century corn mill and long barn in a 22-acre nature reserve that is bisected by Siston Brook. It was working as a mill until the floods of 1968 devastated the area. The mill was abandoned until restoration began in 1979 as a result of an agreement between Kingswood Council and the Avon Wildlife Trust, which now runs the site.

Aspects Leisure Park sits above the A4174 ring road and includes a cinema, bowling alley, several restaurants and a gym. A swimming pool was opened in 2007 and Laser Fusion in 2006.

Shopping

Superstores include Asda (the location for a 1994 episode of Chucklevision), DIY chains and Jollyes pet supplies. Smaller outlets include Jenny's tack shop, Cherry Art Centre and several food outlets. Meanwhile, in the retail park are high street names such as Boots, Next, Clarks and New Look, The Carphone Warehouse, Clinton Cards and River Island, Marks & Spencer and Allied carpets.

Where to eat

Fast food van Jake's snack shack has been around for 20 years with various owners. In Aspects Leisure Park are Chiquito, Nando's and Frankie and Benny's.

Pubs include The Crown and The Butcher's Arms on Bath Road, and the Wishing Well on Aspects Leisure Park.

Schools and community

Longwell Green County Primary School is the only school in the village and has received an "outstanding" report by inspectors Ofsted .

Local secondary schools include Hanham High, The Grange Community School, Wellsway and SBL. The community is also very well served by three pre-schools. Longwell Green Pre-School, Busy Bees and Footprints.

Longwell Green Community Centre is in the heart of the old village. In the grounds is the scouts' HQ.
