I saved up to see the stars
MY memories of the Hippodrome go back to the mid 1950s. I was a teenager still at school and used to save my paper round money to see stars like Dickie Valentine, Al Martino and Tony Bennett. We would then rush round to the stage door to get photos signed. Tony Bennett (pictured) was there with a little boy on his knee. I presume that must have been his little son who is now his manager. Who would have thought he would still be touring today!
Also my gran had a big house in Culver Street and I've been told by older family members that she used to have some of the old 'music hall' people stay at her home when they were appearing at the Hippodrome.
