Bob Davis, site manager for Ken Biggs Contractors, said: "It is a very challenging project, but enjoyable and different.

"It is good to see this part completed, but we are still working hard across the site. We demolished the modern crematorium wing on the Non-Conformist Chapel, repaired its stone work and roof and are replastering the walls inside. We are going to build a new glazed pavilion entrance way, and hope to finish there in September.

"The East Lodge was in a shocking state of disrepair when we started. We have extensively repaired the roof structure. Internally, we are taking the existing joinery out of the building and repairing it before putting it back in place.

"It will all be re-plastered with traditional materials, and there will be new heating and electrics.

"We are also doing lots of ground works on site, strengthening existing retaining walls and building new ones, and making new footpaths through the cemetery for ease of access. The driveways are being re-surfaced too."
